Yakushima Island is registered as a World Natural Heritage Site. Its pristine coastline and crystal clear waters attract tourits each day.
Due to its thriving nature, yakushima Island, south of Cape Sata in the southern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993- together with the Shirakami Mountains in Aomori Prefecture. This was Japan's first ever inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. About 75% of the island is mountainouns with Mt.Miyanoura, the high peak in Kyushu, situated in the middle of the island, surrounded by many other tall mountains of exceeding 1500m. This island is also known as the "Alps on the Ocean."
From the coasts to the mountain peaks, the microclimate varies from subtropical to subarctic climates, increasing with altitude. In the same way, the vegetation also varies, as if the natural geographic character of the Japanese archipelago is condensed into one single location. Having much rainfall throughout the year, the island is covered with lush green forests which are home to many Yaku cedars, some of which are over 1,000 years old and thus creating a mysterious atomosphere. Other noteworthy attractions include the Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine with beautiful valleys and primeval forests, the Yaku Cedar Land with massive magnificent trees, and the Inaka-hama Beach where sea turtles go to lay their eggs. Guided eco hiking tours as well as leisurely strolls are also available to visitors.
The Yakushima Goshinzan Festival held at the Miyanoura River is a special and unique event with links to a mountain god cult. Visitors are welcome to participate in the summer festival and shrine ritual. During the festival is a spectacular ceremony during which a fire is built on a turret constructed in the middle of the river. The Goshinzan Festival is certainly a festival not to be missed!
