The beautiful Power Spot (location with mystical energy) adorned with cherry blossoms and colored leaves has the largest Otorii in Japan
Oyunohara spreads behind the largest Torii Gate in Japan (about 34 meters tall and 42 meters wide). Since ancient times, people of Japan have made pilgrimage to sacred Kumano Sanzan (three grand shrines of Kumano); Hongu, Shingu and Nachi. Kumano Hongu Taisha, the final destination of the pilgrimage, once stood here. There were an array of 12 shrine pavilions, kagura hall, Noh stage and other buildings in the wide precinct. However, a severe flood destroyed most of the buildings in 1889. Now only two small stone shrines remain.
There is no shadow of what it used to be, but you can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring and red and yellow leaves in autumn. With legends that deities descended to the place, Oyunohara has become popular as a place with a mystical power attracting many tourists in recent years.
Kumano Hongu Taisha has been reconstructed at a place about 10 minutes on foot from Oyunohara. Four shrine pavilions salvaged after the flood were relocated to the same place. Oyunohara has been sacred in the past and still remain so for many people. Its sacred air may refresh your feeling.
