Hidden Christians and the ruins

Oita, Kyushu

Not many know that Taketa used to be one of the strongholds for the Christian missionary in the 16th century in Japan. It is believed that more than 30,000 people were Christians in Taketa when Christianity was banned in 1596. Hard times for Christians began and their traces lost in the mists of time. Some of the Christian traces surfaced only recently such as cave chapel found in the back of a Samurai residence. A series of late discoveries point to the possibility of pro-Christian Daimyo (feudal lord) reign in Taketa. Many questions are yet to be answered.
