Museum on Yoron Island

Southern Cross Center is a 5-story museum widely introducing the culture, history, industry, specialty products, etc of Amami Islands including Yoron Island. The name is chosen because Yoron Island is the norther limit to see the Southern Cross.

In Kotohira Shrine on its premise, Yoron full moon dance is held three times a year to invite good harvest. Two types of dance with different masks, attires and colors are performed alternately. The dance with 440-year long tradition is designated as a significant intangible folk cultural asset of Japan. The event is open to the public, and you can enjoy its videos in the center in other days as well.

The top fifth floor at 106-meter above sea level has an observatory. On fine days it offers a 360-degree view of the north part of Okinawa Main Island and nearby islands. It may take about 30 minutes to look around here. By learning about the past of the island and lives of residents, you may feel the beauty of the island more vividly.
