Otaru Museum canal building

Hokkaido, Hokkaido

The Otaru Museum, which was established in 1956, began to reuse the historic architecture of the ex-Otaru Warehouse in 1985 to present the natural and cultural heritage of Otaru, a commercial city in Hokkaido, the northmost island in Japan. Exhibit Room I displays restored stores dating back to the early 1900s, as well as documents about the history of the city, and the herring fishing industry which once brought prosperity to the city. Exhibit Room II has dioramas illustrating natural scenes, insect specimens and earthenware, and even provides hands-on experience in the technique for making fire in ancient times. It also exhibits a wide range of image documents.’
