Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Center

Osaka, Kansai

An historic shopping arcade since the Edo period
With both long-established stores and popular fashion stores

At the heart of Shinsaibashi, Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Center is a shopping arcade lined with about 180 stores, including a department store. The center attracts about 60,000 shoppers per day on weekdays and 120,000 on weekends and holidays.

It has a long history. In the mid-18th century, when kimono shop Matsuya (currently Daimaru department store) opened, it was already a shopping district, with shops dealing in furniture, used books, musical instruments, etc. Later, the center fulfilled a leading role in retailing in Osaka, which gathered goods from all over the country. During the Meiji and Taisho periods, retailers dealing in foreign goods, watches, etc. increased and flourished with the development of Osaka. Today, Shinsaibashi-suji blends good old Japan and trendy fashion with its diverse shops from old establishments with over 100-year history to apparel stores offering the latest fashion. It is said to have the strongest brand power as a shopping street in Osaka.
