Hokkaidoritsu Kushiro Geijutsukan (Museum of Art)

Hokkaido, Hokkaido

Hokkaidoritsu Kushiro Geijutsukan is situated by the Kushiro-gawa, a river that flows through the center of the city of Kushiro. In addition to its fine art exhibits, the museum aims to show an eclectic collection of quality works of art that include visual arts such as photography, as well as works related to Kushiro, all unified by a nature theme. In addition to the exhibition halls, the museum is equipped with an art room of 200 seats, and a workshop room/free art room, where visitors can study and experience fine art and music. Works housed in the museum include paintings by Hikaru Hanyu, a Japanese-style painter living in the city of Kushiro. These paintings are entitled “Kita-no Hamabe” (North Beach), and depict scenes of the coastline of this region during fall and winter. Also included is a work by plastic artist Norihiro Nakae entitled “Tamashi-no Ansoku-bi” (Sabbath of the Soul), an arrangement composed of a chair and a wooden form that evokes the human body.
