Hachimantai-onsen Hot Spring

Iwate, Tohoku

Hot spring resort where each place is supplied with sulfur spring water gushing from underground (hot water from magma)

Designated as Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Hachimantai is a plateau with 1400 to 1600 m mountains along the border between Iwate and Akita prefectures. Hachimantai Hot Springs are at the foot of Mount Iwate, one of the mountains. The hot spring originates from use of hot water by Matsukawa geothermal plant in 1971 and has become popular among pleasure seekers as a base for sightseeing in Hachimantai. The wonderful views of colored leaves in autumn, in particular, attract many tourists.

The resort has a variety of accommodation facilities including hotels, inns, pension and minshuku (tourist home), each of which has sulfur bath fed by the magma-heated spring source. Nearby is Hachimantai Resort that is one of the largest resorts in Tohoku, where you can enjoy leisure activities throughout year-skiing in winter, trekking, golf, angling and mountain climbing in summer, for example. Many people visit Hachimantai not only for such activities but also for peace and quiet by feeling the breeze and listening to the singing of birds. Needless to say, healing the heart will be followed by healing the body in a hot spring. They say Hachimantai hot spring is good for nerve pain, sore muscles, joint pain, fatigue, feeling of cold, frozen shoulder, bruise, chronic digestive disorder, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, cuts, chronic skin diseases, diabetes, hemorrhoids, chronic feminine problems, etc.
