Otaki Limestone Cave

Gifu

The diverse array of stalactites and the waterfall flowing underground
teach us about the mysteries of nature.

Otaki Limestone Cave is the biggest system of limestone caverns in the Tokai region. As you walk along the path through the cool air untouched by daylight, the diverse array of stalactites is a joy to behold, including some that have turned red from the metal ions that have melted into them, some that are so transparent that light can pass through them, and others that are milky-white. Some particularly unusual ones have been given names, like "Decorated Cake" and "The Leaning Tower of Pizza", and you could even have fun thinking about what you would have called them.

The Otaki Limestone Cave was formed when a fault in the limestone rock formation was melted and widened by groundwater. According to the surveys carried out to date, it is about 2 km long. The section opened to the general public accounts for about 700 m of the cave, where the stalactites are particularly well-developed, and a path has been created. It takes around 30 minutes to look around the cave. The 30 m-high waterfall at the far end is the symbol of this cavern.

It is said to take about 100 years for the stalactites to grow by just 1 cm. When you gaze upon the stalactites that have existed since time immemorial and are still continuing to grow today, you'll feel like an explorer contemplating the mysteries of nature.
