Odori Park 大通公園

Odori Park Odori Park
Odori Park Odori Park

A stretch of green in the heart of Sapporo

Visit Odori Park to mingle with locals picnicking out in the sun, or stroll through after a day of shopping for a relaxing afternoon walk. Lined with trees, the park has a large, fragrant rose garden on the west side, fountains throughout the middle, and interesting statues scattered around. If all that walking works up an appetite, don't miss the small stalls that sell two of Hokkaido's specialties—grilled corn on the cob and hot, buttery potatoes.

Don't Miss

  • Feasting on local delights during the Autumn Fest in September
  • Cheering for the dancers at the Yosakoi Soran Festival in June
  • Relaxing with a pint at the Odori Beer Garden in late summer
  • Superb statues at the Sapporo Snow Festival in February

Quick Facts

Roughly 1.5 kilometers long, the park covers thirteen blocks in total

Constructed in 1871, it was designed to be a fire break for the city

The original name was Shiribeshi Dori (later changed to Odori in June 1881)

The name Odori, in Japanese, means "large street"

How to Get There

Catch a 35-minute rapid airport train from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station , then transfer to the Namboku or Toho subway line to Odori Park (one stop south). For those who prefer to walk, the park is roughly 10 minutes away from Sapporo Station , with paths both above and below ground.

A walk in the park

Find thousands of documents and learn more about the history of Sapporo, at the Sapporo City Archive Museum (Nishi 13-chome) at the west end of the park (free entry). For families, Nishi 8-chome and 9-chome are great places to stop, as they offer playgrounds and slides for children.

A must-visit is the iconic Sapporo TV Tower at the east end (Nishi 1-chome) for unforgettable views from the top.

Party all along odori

Numerous large-scale events are held in Odori all year long. The Sapporo White Illumination and Sapporo German Christmas Market are well worth a visit in December, while the famous Sapporo Snow Festival in February draws visitors from all over the world. Spirited and vibrant, the Yosakoi Soran Festival kicks off summer in early June, while the open-air Odori Beer Garden (open from late-July to mid-August) wraps up the warm weather.

For those who prefer cooler weather, there are food and flower festivals in the spring and autumn months. Among the most notable is the Autumn Fest, which is the newest festival of the bunch.
