Prayers for lasting peace in the world

The ceremony is held in front of the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims (Memorial Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace) in Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park with the participation of many people including the families of the atomic bomb victims, in order to comfort the spirits of the atomic bomb victims and to pray for lasting peace in the world.

  • Floating lanterns down the river; said to have started soon after the WWII, when survivors and those who lost relatives and friends in the atomic bombing floated handmade lanterns down the river as a memorial and a hope for recovery

How to Get There

From JR Hiroshima Station, take the Hiroshima Electric Railway tram (No. 2 or 6) and get off at the Genbaku Dome-mae stop. The journey takes 17 minutes.

Coming together for a peaceful future

Anyone of any nationality can participate in the daytime ceremony. In the evening, a 'lantern floating ceremony' takes place, where paper lanterns are lit and floated down the Motoyasu River with messages of peace.

A sense of togetherness

The Peace Memorial Ceremony aims to commemorate the dead and pray for world peace. Some people worry that they may not be welcome to attend the ceremony or that they may feel out of place, but everyone is welcome. Feel free to attend.
