About restricted area around Owakudani

The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the volcano alert for Owakudani Park in Hakone town to level 3 on Tuesday 30th June 12:30 p.m.

Level 3 restricts entry to a 1km radius of the Owakudani volcanic vents.

The Hakone local government has taken the following measures as of 30th June 2015:

a.. Traffic ban to prefectural roads 734, 735 ( Sounzan ~ Ubako )

b.. Some people of these areas (Ubako, Kamiyuba, Shimoyuba, Hakone-sounkyo villa) were ordered to evacuate their homes.

c.. Hakone Ropeway substitute bus service has been suspended.

d.. Some local buses that run through the restricted area have been suspended.

From the 6th of July, Hakone Ropeway Substitute Buses have resumed operation and are taking the alternate route to avoid the restricted area.

These measures were taken in order to safeguard the tourists.

The safety of tourists comes first. The Hakone local government will exchange information with the Hot Springs Research Institute of Kanagawa Prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency and the relevant organizations of Kanagawa Prefecture to transmit the appropriate information.
