From Tokyo to Kagoshima, it takes approximately eight hours via Kyushu shinkansen.
There are regular highway busses that connect Kagoshima to Osaka, Kobe, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Miyazaki.
Aside from Sakurajima Ferry, travelers can opt to take the regular ferries to Yakushima, Amami-Oshima and other remote islands for sightseeing.
