Often referred to as the roof of Japan, Nagano is home to the highest mountain ranges in Japan. This makes the area popular to outdoor sports buffs, especially those of skiing and snowboarding. Bits of the rural culture can still be observed in Nagano, particularly in the villages of Tsumago and Narai. The Matsumoto Castle also survived the test of time, along with the festivals of the area. Visitors can also visit Karuizawa for a casual cosmopolitan atmosphere.
