Naruto Strait

Tokushima, Shikoku

A great natural attraction!
Stunning whirling waves splashing and spraying of water

Naruto Strait with its violently whirling currents like an amusement park attraction is located between Hyogo and Tokushima. The site is has been selected as one of the top 100 landscapes of Japan.

The rise and fall of the tides produced by the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun create dynamic whirling currents depending on the topography. The whirling waves are strongest at two different times during a month; at full moon and new moon. The current is as fast as 20km per hour at the time of spring and autumn tides. Because the best time to see whirling waves is different depending on the day, it is important to plan your schedule in advance.

The ocean promenade “Uzu-no-michi” is convenient for access to the whirlpool. It has been constructed under the Ohnaruto Bridge. You can experience the thrilling view through the glass floors of an observatory at 45 meters above the sea. The roaring sound of the whirlpool will further increase the impact of the dynamic landscape. Because the entire promenade is glass-walled, you can enjoy the magnificent view comfortably even in the cold and in bad weather. The whirlpool ship “Kanrinmaru” of the Uzushio Cruise also offers views of the whirling waves. This cruise will touch the heart of travelers as it navigates historic sites and highlights of the Naruto Strait for about an hour.
