Kijoka-no Bashofu (plantain tree fabric)

Bashofu textile has a history strongly associated with the Ryukyu Dynasty in Okinawa-ken long ago, and it was designated as an important intangible cultural asset in 1974.
Because of its rich and varied expression of colors, lightness and unique texture soft to the touch, it is still loved today as material for summer Kimono.
Bashofu is a completely handmade product, so it cannot help but be expensive. Some small items such as coasters, wallets or name card cases have affordable prices. Bashofu products are sold at "Ogimi Village Bashofu Kaikan" where you can also see the production process. It might be fun to visit "Yachimun-kan" on Ishigaki Island or the "Ginza Washita Shop", the antenna shop of Okinawa situated in Ginza, Tokyo.
