Shimane Kenritsu Bijutsukan (Art Museum)

Shimane Kenritsu Bijutsukan is located on a site which once housed samurai of Matsue domain (present day Shimane Prefecture), adjacent to the prefectural office in central Matsue city. In addition to archaeological materials, the museum houses paintings, calligraphy, and works of art by artists born in or otherwise closely connected to Shimane Prefecture. The museum also displays a collection of ukiyo-e woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, who is known for his work Tokaido-Gojusantsugi (Fifty-three Stages on the Tokai-do Highway), as well as those by Katsushika Hokusai, famed for his pieces depicting actors and beauties, which make use of Western painting techniques.
