The Immigration Bureau conducts activities that include immigration control, alien registration, visa status checks, and refugee status determination. Most visitors to Japan are involved with the Immigration Bureau only during immigration. Please note that visas are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Please see the link below for information on visas. If a visa needs to be changed to one for staying in Japan, a visa status check is required before the visa is applied for. This screening process is under the jurisdiction of the Immigration Bureau.
