Yaku Island (Yakushima-cho, Kagoshima Pref.)
Yakushima (Yaku Island) was the first site in Japan to be inscribed on the world heritage list.

Shiratani Unsui Gorge-
Located about 30 minutes from Miyanoura by car, here you will find a restful forest at an elevation of 800 meters.
Here you can see a beautiful natural environment, the primeval forest of Yaku Island, rivers with pure water and waterfalls, moss grows luxuriantly around the mountain streams and the forest has a mysterious scent and green color. There are six courses available, and your choice will depend on how much energy you have (1-5 hour courses).
Yaku Cedar Land-
At a distance of about 40 minutes from Awa by car, this is a restful forest located at an elevation of 1,000-1,300 meters. You can easily find several Yaku cedar trees in the primeval forest. There are 4 courses available, and your choice will depend on how much energy you have (courses taking 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes).
Jomon Period Cedar Trees-
It is said that these Jomon cedar trees are 7,200 years old, and they have become the symbol of Yaku Island. A round trip of 10 hours, it takes real mountain climbing if you want to see these Jomon cedar trees. On the way, you will find several Yaku cedars and Wilson stumps (cedar trees cut down under orders by Toyotomi Hideyoshi).
