Sightseeing boats offer the perfect vantage point from which visitors can take in the sights of streets steeped in such an atmosphere. Some boats chart a course that takes passengers from the city and out into the majestic Tone River.

Here, the treasures and tools that have been handed down from generation to generation within each family of merchant houses are on display, and you can enjoy exploring the city and shopping to your heart's content.

The Sawara Festival has a history going back 300 years, with a total of 24 large floats parading the city streets in the summer and autumn. Two actual floats are on display at the Float Hall.

Katori Jingu Shrine is one of the most important shrines in Japan. Legend has it that it was first built in the seventh century B.C. Huge numbers of pilgrims flock here year-round. Some arrive to welcome in the New Year while others come to view the cherry blossom trees in spring and the crimson foliage in autumn. The shrine possesses national treasures as well as many cultural properties.
