Hiroshima, The Water Capital-
Six rivers run quietly through the urban areas of the city, emptying into the gentle waters of the Inland Sea of Japan. The open cafe on the waterfront, built in 2005, is a very popular spot. River excursion boats and water taxis ply the rivers. Here you will find a local specialty, Hiroshima Okonomiyaki, and rich natural resources that lead to fine marine products like oysters, which have a good reputation nationwide.
- Hiroshima Okonomiyaki:
- Japanese-style, pizza-like, round cake of unsweetened batter fried with various ingredients
Memorial Cathedral for World Peace-
Supported by the Pope and the people from all over the world, Hugo Lassalle, a parish priest who survived the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945, dedicated himself to the reconstruction of the church as a memorial for world peace and the victims of the bombing. The reconstruction was finished in 1954. The building was highly regarded as a church built during the post-war period for its blend of classical western and traditional Japanese construction elements, and in 2006, along with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, it was designated as an important national cultural property due to its post-war construction.
