RENTAL CARS

Driving is not recommended in major cities. However, your client may wish to rent a car for travel in rural areas, especially Hokkaido, Tohoku, Shikoku, and other less populated regions. Remind your client that driving is on the left side of the road and most road signs are only in Japanese. Also warn your client that an international driver's license is required in almost all cases (a driver's license issued in Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and Taiwan is valid in Japan if translated into Japanese by the respective embassies in Japan or the Japan Automobile Federation).

The average rental rate for 24 hours, including unlimited mileage but not gasoline, is:
Sub-compact (1,000-1,300cc) for 5,000yen-11,000yen,
Compact (1,500-1,800cc) for 9,000yen-13,500yen,
Intermediate (2,000cc) for 14,000-30,000yen.
