NOTES ON DISCOUNTED FARES & SURCHARGES
1)For roundtrip tickets covering more than 600 km one way, a 10 percent discount is applied to the basic fare.
2)If a ticket includes travel by both Shinkansen and connecting lines, the surcharge for the connecting line is reduced 50 percent (the ticket holder must change trains from the Shinkansen to connecting lines on the same day, and from connecting lines to the Shinkansen on the same or following day). Note that no discount is given for connections made in Tokyo and Shinagawa.
3)Some designated areas offer reduced prices for travel on specific routes.
4)Surcharges vary according to the season, with slightly higher prices charged during peak season and lower prices in the off season. Traveling during peak season requires advance reservations, since securing a seat is not easy. JR designates the seasons as follows:
Off Season: Jan. 18-Feb. 29, June, Sept., Nov. 1-Dec. 20 (except Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays and the days preceding a national holiday).
Peak Season: Apr. 28-May 6, July 21-Aug. 31, Dec. 25-Jan. 10, Mar. 21-Apr. 5.
Normal Season: All days except the above.
Note: When using trains operated by JR Hokkaido alone or JR Kyushu alone, their Off/Peak Season calendars are slightly different.
