ACCESS FROM THE AIRPORT TO TOKYO

As Narita International Airport is 60 km from downtown Tokyo, advice on how to reach Tokyo with the least difficulty and expense will be greatly appreciated by your clients. Leading Japanese land operators offer meeting and transfer services by sedan or Airport Limousine Bus between Narita Airport and central Tokyo. Similar services are available for Haneda Airport, Kansai and Central Japan International Airport.

Access by Public Transportation

Airport Limousine Bus

The Airport Limousine Bus, with comfortable reclining seats and wide picture windows, picks up passengers just outside the arrival lobbies of both Terminal 1 and 2. It's the easiest and most convenient mode of transportation for clients with heavy suitcases, since it offers nonstop door-to-door service to major hotels in the Tokyo area. Or, for business travelers in a hurry, luggage can be sent to their hotel, while they can take the limousine bus elsewhere, like Tokyo Station. Ticket counters for the Airport Limousine Bus are located in the arrival lobbies.

The Airport Limousine Bus also operates direct buses to the Tokyo Disney Resort area and to Haneda Airport (Tokyo's airport for domestic travel), while the Keisei Bus provides service to the convention complex Makuhari Messe. The Airport Limousine Bus also connects to the Tokyo City Air Terminal, conveniently connected to the Suitengu-mae subway station, and Yokohama City Air Terminal (YCAT). Note, however, that passengers are not allowed to check in at the City Air Terminals for security reasons.

From the airport, the Airport Limousine Bus usually takes about an hour to reach TCAT and 90 minutes or longer to reach YCAT and most of the hotels in Tokyo, depending on traffic. Schedules and fares are available at http://www.limousinebus.co.jp/route/.

JR Trains

If your clients are transferring from the airport to the Shinkansen bullet train or another train for immediate travel outside Tokyo, they will find it more convenient to take the limited express train to Tokyo Station. Trains are also the fastest mode of transportation to central Tokyo, especially during peak rush hours. The Narita Express (N'EX), operated by JR, departs from an underground station below Terminal 1 (called Narita Airport Station) and from an underground station below Terminal 2 (called Airport Terminal 2 Station). The N'EX travels to Tokyo Station in about 60 minutes; it also travels to Chiba, Shinagawa, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Yokohama and Ofuna stations. The cars are specifically designed for large suitcases, with wide doors and spacious, designated luggage areas. N'EX also offers luxurious first-class compartments (called Green Cars), as well as private compartments. All signs and announcements are in Japanese and English. English information is also available on board through a telephone service.

Tickets for N'EX can be purchased at ticket counters located in the arrivals lobby of both terminals and at vending machines near the wicket gate with instructions in English. Reservations can also be made online at http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/eastpass/passticket.html (Japanese)

Japan Rail Pass

Clients who are traveling in Japan with a Japan Rail Pass can use the Narita Express (N'EX) at no extra charge, but they'll first have to exchange the Japan Rail Exchange Order (which, with the exception of several JR regional passes, must be purchased outside Japan from authorized outlets http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en001.html ) for the actual pass at Japan Railway (JR) ticket counter on the basement floor, open daily from 6:30 a.m to 9:45p.m. Even clients who are not traveling immediately onward may wish to turn in their Exchange Order at the airport for the Japan Rail Pass. Otherwise, a list of train stations in Japan with a Travel Service Center where Exchange Orders may be exchanged for Rail Passes is provided to every pass holder upon purchase of the Exchange Order. Most are open from about 10am to 7pm and there are several in Tokyo alone. Clients have 3 months from the date of issue of the Exchange Order to exchange it for the Rail Pass. When obtaining the actual pass, clients must then specify the starting date within a 1-month period.

Keisei Trains

In addition to JR's Narita Express (N'EX), another train, the Keisei Skyliner, makes runs from the underground station below Terminal 1 (called Narita Airport Station) and from the underground station below Terminal 2 (called Airport Terminal 2 Station) to Nippori Station and Keisei Ueno Station in Tokyo. The trip to Ueno takes about an hour. Nippori is connected to the JR Yamanote commuter line, while both JR Ueno Station and the Ueno Metro station are within a short, underground walk from Keisei Ueno Station.
