TIPS FOR HANDICAPPED TRAVELERS

Japan's buses and trains have special seats for the elderly and disabled, though travelers who need extra time embarking and disembarking should avoid traveling at peak hours. The Shinkansen bullet train is well equipped for travelers with disabilities, with special seats for the disabled which can be reserved in advance. In addition, more than 4,000 train and subway stations are equipped with elevators or escalators, including those in major tourist destinations. An increasing number of hotels offer wheelchair-accessible rooms, though this is the exception rather than the rule. For information regarding accessibility for the disabled in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kamakura, including hotels, restaurants, sights, and public transportation, see http://accessible.jp.org/.
