Domestic Calls
Public telephones accept 10yen and 100yen coins and/or telephone cards. A local call costs 10yen per minute, so it's wise to insert two or three 10yen coins to avoid being cut off (unused coins are returned, but no change is given for partial use of a 100yen coin). Prepaid telephone cards, available from vending machines located next to telephones, kiosks at train stations, and convenience stores, cost 1,000yen and can be used in many public telephones by inserting them into a designated slot.
Charges for inter-city calls vary according to the distance. Domestic calls are cheaper at night (PM 11:00 to AM 8:00).
Area Codes: Telephone numbers in Japan consist of an area code and a phone number. Tokyo's area code is 03 and Osaka's is 06.
