The agate craft of the city of Obama, Fukui Prefecture is also highly acclaimed abroad. Agate is a mineral formed approximately 300 million years ago, and is a hard and heavy stone consisting mainly of an oxide of silicon. Tradition has it that agate craft in this region began in the first half of the 18th century, and the original production techniques and polishing materials are still being used today. Products available include accessories, carvings, ornaments and interior decorations. Agate is characterized by a beautiful translucent, red luster. Wakasa-meno-zaiku agate craft was designated a traditional craft in 1976.
