Its shopping street with beautiful stone pavement is lined with brand shops, cafes, restaurants and other stores with the Yokohama atmosphere, which make you feel like you are in a fashionable foreign town. Motomachi shopping street originates from business with foreigners who started to live in Yamate District during the 1870s. The town’s people developed their Western culture by learning skills of baking, laundry, tailoring of Western clothes, and Western furniture. The tradition has been passed down to today’s manufacturing and created a fashion style called hamatora. Kitamura’s bags, Mihama’s shoes, and Fukuzo’s apparel remain perennial favorites.
