Kawanoe Castle (Kawanoe-jo) stands on a beachfront and is believed to have been originally built in 1337. A sad story is told that Kawakami Yasukatsu, who was the lord of the castle in the latter half of the 16th century, was murdered by his men and his 17-year-old daughter threw herself off the nearby cliff in an attempt to escape from the enemy. Nothing remains of the donjon, but the foundation and stone walls of the buildings that were built back then are redolent of the bygone days.
