A beautiful diverse coastline to attract many visitors. If you're lucky, you may be able to observe sea turtles laying their eggs.
The Anan Coast, located in the southern part of Shikoku, faces the Pacific Ocean. The coast is known for its beautiful seascape and as a place where sea turtles come to lay their eggs. The pure waters of the Anan Coast is part of the Muroto-Anan Coast Quasi National Park and is influenced by the Kuroshio (black current), a strong western boundary current in the Pacific Ocean. The seawater is extremely clean and there is an abundance of marine products due to the fact that this area has very few sources of pollution nearby, such as urban areas or factories. The area is also known for its tall waves and as there are many ideal surfing locations such as the coast of Shishikui, this area is known as the surfer's Mecca in western Japan. Several different areas connect along the coastline, each with its own unique characteristic, including the Ohama Coast in Hiwasa and the towering cliffs of the Senba Cliffs. The region can be roughly broken up into three areas: Hiwasa area, Anan area, and the Shishikui area.
The Ohama Coast in the Hiwasa area has a wide sandy beach and from the middle of May to the middle of August, sea turtles will visit this area to lay their eggs. When the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, you can watch them lay their eggs with instruction and guidance of the Sea Turtle Preservation staff. Nearby, at the Hiwasa Sea Turtle Museum Caretta, you can learn about the ecology of turtles and watch 1 meter long sea turtles swimming in the pool.
The Senba Cliffs are also located in this area. These sheer cliffs rise to a height of about 250 meters and continue along a 2 kilometer stretch of the coast. The Anan Coast for the most part is a calm coastal area but is also varied and has a few rugged rocky areas.
The Anan area is located along the eastern edge of the Anan Coast, and is where Tsunomine Park is located. With an elevation of 284 meters, the park offers a commanding view of Tachibana Bay. The Shishikui area displays yet again another form of elegance. The Mitoko Bay in Shishikui boasts a beautiful ria coastline and is dotted with islands of various sizes, making this area look like a beautiful painting. At Takegashima Marine Park, you can board an underwater sightseeing boat that allows you to enjoy the view of the coral reef and colorful tropical fish from the bottom of the sea.
