Kirishima City is located on the northeastern part of Kagoshima prefecture and is the entrance to the Kirishima district of the Kirishima-Kinokowan National Park (Kirishima volcanic chain, Sakurajima, etc.)
The brilliant red structure of Kirishima shrine is officially disignated as an "Important Cultural Property" and is a main site for music performances and festivals held as offerings for the gods. These events include the "Kagura" dance during the Minami-Kyushu Kagura Festival in summertime (ancient traditional performing art featuring dance and music performed to please the gods), the "Tenson Korin Gojinkasai" Fire Festival in the fall, and the performance of the Kumen-daiko drums in winter.
There are a total of ten crater lakes within the Kirishima mountain range 1,239m above sea level- the highest elevation of its kind throuhout the nation. The beautiful Miyama-Kirishima azalea bloom in the early summer. The panoramic view from the mountain tops is breathtaking. Hot spring villages such as Myoban, Yunotani, and Shin-yu are found on the southwestern slope of the Kirishima mountain range. Accommodation facilities are available to all visitors wishing to stay overnight,but it is also possible to make a day trip simply to enjoy the hot springs.
