Torigoe-jinja Yo-matsuri (Torigoe-jinja Night Festival)

Torigoe-jinja is an old shrine with a 1350 year history, and the night festival is famous for its large portable shrine, known as Sengan Mikoshi. A kan is a unit of weight used in Japan in earlier times, and sengan (1000 kan) equals 3.75 tons. The shrine is said to be the heaviest of its kind in Tokyo. The portable shrine, decorated with paper lanterns, is carried to Torigoe-jinja surrounded by people holding paper lanterns. Many people gather to experience the wonderful atmosphere.
