Popular for its shows featuring 150 marine mammals of 13 different species,
as well as the hands-on feeding experience for visitors
Otaru Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Hokkaido. The Main Building features 5,000 sea creatures of 250 different species, with a primary focus on fish that live in Hokkaido and polar regions; visitors can see the only harbour porpoises in Japan, as well as a range of other unusual species, including Siberian salamanders and Clione.
One of the attractions at the Otaru Aquarium is its collection of 150 marine mammals of 13 different species, including earless seals, walruses, Steller sea lions, and penguins. One highlight is the acrobatic shows put on by the creatures living a carefree life in the pools at the Marine Mammal Park, which is sited on the coast overlooking the Sea of Japan. In addition, we would definitely recommend the hands-on feeding experience for visitors at the spotted seal and harbor seal pool, and at the Steller sea lion pool. You can watch the sweet performances that these creatures put on when they want food. Sometimes wild Steller sea lions and spotted seals come ashore, so don't forget to keep an eye out along the coast. The aquarium also features a seating area where you can relax, as well as a shop and restaurant, so you can enjoy a fulfilling day out.
