Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium

Penguins playing on the seaside in Japan! An adorable aquarium with eight species of penguins

The main feature of this aquarium is the penguins. The facility keeps eight species of penguins, including lovable Little Penguins and King Penguins, which can reach 90cm tall. There are also Mekong giant catfish, Golden mandarin fish, Japanese horseshoe crab, and other powerful creatures, sea goldie, Clownfish, and other cute fish, as well as Christmas tree worms, and other sun corals.

In Tachibana Bay, adjacent to the aquarium, a trial which is the first of its kind in the world is being implemented. A apart of the sea is isolated by using nets and fences, and the penguins are released into this part of the ocean for observation by visitors. You can watch their behavior similar to wildlife, such as swimming in the water at high speed to catch feed thrown by the aquarium staff, which is a scene rarely observed elsewhere. The aquarium also offers many other kinds of fun events, such as a penguin parade, touching penguins, and sea kayaking (a fee is charged separately).

In the Nature Zone outside is a biotope that re-creates the environment of the countryside of Nagasaki, where many grasses, flowers and trees, including endangered species grow. Japanese rhinoceros beetle and Japanese killifish live among the plants that grow just as they would in pure nature. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery for each season of the year and abundant nature here to your heart's content.
