Shinkabukiza Theater, Osaka
A theater highlighting popular performing arts unique to Japan
(C) ShinkabukizaShinkabukiza Theater opened in 2010, on the 6th floor of the Uehommachi Yufura Shopping Zone, in the Uehommachi district of Osaka. Despite its name, this is not actually a dedicated kabuki theater; it actually shows many plays, musicals, ballad shows featuring famous singers, and period dramas based on events in Japanese history. The content of the shows is also characterized by easily-comprehensible, familiar themes appropriate to popular entertainment, such as affection between parents and children, and husbands and wives, as well as the complex relationships between duty and human emotion. Particularly popular are performances featuring singers in the uniquely Japanese enka vocal style, as well as those compered by big stars.
Unlike in big theaters, the stage is very close to the seats, enabling the audience to enjoy an ambience that really brings the performance alive. Inside the theater is a cafeteria and a bento box shop, with seats where you can have a meal during the intermission; in addition, the lobby houses a shop selling various souvenirs of your visit to the theater, as well as items associated with Osaka. The performances change each month, so do check the website. This is a theater where you can get a taste of performing arts unique to Japan.
