Awa-odori Kaikan Hall

Tokushima

A museum where you can experience the Awa Odori dance-fun to watch and do

Awa Odori is a traditional Bon dance performed in summer. It originated in Tokushima Prefecture and is danced to the lively call of "Erai-yaccha, erai-yaccha, yoi-yoi-yoi-yoi." Various Bon dances, which started as a Buddhist festival for reposing the souls of the dead, are held throughout Japan. Awa Odori has a history of about 400 years, and is one of the largest festivals in Japan. It is held from August 12 to 15 and enchants about 1.3 million people.

Awaodori Kaikan is a facility opened for conveying the attractiveness of Awa Odori and entertaining guests throughout the year. There are explanations on the history and attractiveness of Awa Odori, exhibitions of costumes and musical instruments used, and a 3D theater where guests can enjoy the dance, but the main attraction is the actual Awa Odori performance. The exclusive group for the facility, Awa No Kaze, performs an old-fashioned dance, a modern-style dance, and dances under the themes of flowers, birds, wind, and moon. You can dance with the group on stage for the finale. Don't worry; the choreography is fairly simple. The key is to enjoy and dance to the simple double-time rhythm. On the 5th floor of the facility is Sanroku Station for the Bizan Ropeway, which connects the top of Mount Bizan and the center of Tokushima City. You have a full view of the Tokushima Plains from the mountain top, and the lights of the city are especially beautiful at night.
