Tashirotai Marshland

Hiking trails in Tohoku, where lovely alpine flowers bloom

Tashirotai Marsh in Aomori, at the northern end of Tohoku, used to be a caldera lake generated by volcanic activity 2 million years ago. Nearby is 1584-m tall Mount Hakkoda, one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Japan. You can go around the marsh by walking the northern trail and southern trail. Along the trails there are various plants, such as bog-rosemary, Japanese azarea, and day lilies. You can enjoy a carpet of flowers of the season.

Three neatly-made wooden pathways serve as a 1.5 km hiking trail that takes about one-hour to complete. Nearby is Towada-Hachimantai National Park, where you can relax and enjoy nature.

The average temperature in Aomori is less than 25 °C, even in midsummer. You will find this quiet place soothing and calming. This is the right place for people who want to leave hectic daily life behind.
