Taishaku-kyo Valley

Hiroshima

Magnificent scenery including precipitous cliffs, mountain streams, and waterfalls. Ride a horse-drawn carriage to one of the three largest natural bridges in the world.

The Taishaku Valley is a 15-kilometer-long canyon in the Kibi-kogen Highlands in eastern Hiroshima that was carved into the karst tableland by the Taishaku-gawa River. It has magnificent scenery with a wide variety of features, including precipitous cliffs, caves, mountain streams, depths, torrents, and waterfalls.

Among the attractions is Taishakuten Eimyo-ji Temple, an old temple that enshrines the chief deity in Buddhism, Taishakuten, from which the name of the canyon derives. Along a promenade that starts from this temple there are a series of scenic spots, such as the Yosekura-Iwakage Ruin, where many articles from the early to late Jomon Period (Japan's prehistoric period from about 14,000 B.C .to 400 B.C.) were excavated, and Hakuun-do Cave, a 200-meter-long limestone cave.

The highlight of the Taishaku Valley is On-bashi Bridge, a 90-meter-long, 19-meter-wide and 40-meter-high natural limestone bridge. The bridge, regarded as one of the three largest natural bridges in the world, has also been designated as a nation's natural monument. A horse-drawn sightseeing carriage service from the Taishaku Provincial Museum to On-bashi is offered from spring to fall, allowing you to enjoy the natural scenery at your leisure.
