How to Get There

The island is accessible from Honshu by plane or boat.

It was formed from eight lava domes

Sperm whales and humpback whales regularly pass by the island

Sun, sea, and surf

With a yearly spot on the professional surf calendar, the waves at Habushiura Beach, on the east coast of the island, are worth seeking out.

A local dish to sink your teeth into

Take the chance to try the local dried fish, known as kusaya. The preparation of this salty, marinated fish is based on a 300-year-old cooking method exclusive to the island. The fresh fish caught off Niijima also make delicious sushi, which you can enjoy with locally brewed soy sauce.

Unique cultural experiences and hot spring baths

The distinctive green Niijima glass makes the perfect souvenir from the island. Try your hand at making glass at the Niijima Glass Art Center.

Take a hike or a dive and then a hot bath

Go trekking on one of the four courses around the island or enjoy diving in the clear waters off the coast. After a long day, relax in a natural onsen hot bath, like the Yunohama open-air hot spring, located on the west coast overlooking the sea. They are open 24 hours a day and free to use.
