Mihonoseki Lighthouse

Shimane

An historical lighthouse that was completed in 1898 and added to the IALA list of 100 lighthouses as historic and architectural monuments

Mihonoseki Lighthouse is an historic lighthouse that was completed in 1898, more than 100 years ago. It stands on a rock 70 m above sea level, facing the ocean. The lighthouse itself is 14 m tall. It is a stately stone-built construction designed by a French engineer, and was added to the IALA list of 100 lighthouses as historic and architectural monuments (a list proposed by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities [IALA] in 1998, containing five lighthouses in Japan, including Inubousaki Lighthouse).

The government building attached to the lighthouse is now being used as the Mihonoseki Lighthouse Buffet, with a restaurant and souvenir shop. The building preserves the exotic atmosphere of when it was first built, and the actual lens first used for the lighthouse is exhibited. From inside the store, you can enjoy the excellent panoramic view of the Sea of Japan.

The lighthouse is unmanned, and is serving the role of ensuring maritime safety to this day. Although you can observe only the exterior of the lighthouse as a general rule, the inside is opened to the public on Marine Day (the third Monday of July), which is a national holiday, and the Lighthouse Memorial Day (November 1) every year. The lighthouse is surrounded by mountains, the wide sky, and the blue ocean. You can hear only the sounds of wind over waves and bird songs. Get away from the city noise, and immerse yourself in nature for a while.
