Miho Pine Grove (Miho-no-Matsubara)

Shizuoka

A pretty view of Mt. Fuji along the coast!
A famous pine grove that became a stage for a legend about a celestial maiden

Shizuoka Prefectural Tourism AssociationA pine grove spreading along the eastern coast of the Miho Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a spot with a pretty view, where 54,000 pine trees grow over about 7 km and Mt. Fuji towers in the northeastern ski. The famous view here, was selected as one of the best Three Views of Japan and was used by Hiroshige Utagawa, an ukiyoe (Japanese wood block print) artist, as a relaxing base for ukiyoe.

There is a legend that a celestial maiden dropped down to this coast on one occasion. The celestial maiden is said to have gotten out of hagoromo (a beautiful kimono to go up to the heavens) and have swum in the sea. An old pine tree on which she is believed to have hanged her hagoromo when shw was swimming was named "Hagoromo no Matsu," and has become a popular tourist point. On every New Year's Day, many people crowd around the pine tree to see the first sunrise on New Year's Day.

In the path of "Kami no Michi" (god's road) that leads to the pine grove is "Monument to Elene," which consoles the soul of a French dancer, Elene Giuglaris, who was linked to the place by fate. She was touched by the beauty of the legend of hagoromo in learning of a Noh play and came to make a dance work entitled "Hagoromo." It was her dream to visit Miho Pine Grove some day, but she fell ill and died at the young age of 35 despite her desire. Her hair is placed in this monument following her will.

In addition, attractive tourist spots are scattered in the surrounding area, including "Miho Shrine," where a fragment of hagoromo is preserved, and the "Tokai University Marine Science Museum," where you can see fish robots. This area is full of fun.
