Koganezaki Cape

The overwhelming view of the sky and ocean turning red in sunset, seen from the golden cliff wall

Shizuoka Prefectural Tourism AssociationNishi-Izu area is famous for the beautiful sunset view. Among various spots, one of the most beautiful scenes can be enjoyed at Koganezaki. It is a cape on the ocean, and the cliff of the cape was formed by a transubstantial eruption of submarine volcano. While it looks brownish yellow in daytime, it becomes reddish in the setting sun, and turns gold. This unique view is the origin of the name Koganezaki, which means "Golden Cape."

From the top of the cape, you can see a rough and rocky coastline. The bare rock surface is washed by waves, and there are islands and rock reefs offshore. On top of these rocky cliffs are pine trees standing strongly against the ocean wind. When the weather is clear, you can also have a view of Mount Fuji. A description of the beauty of Koganezaki is contained in Kemono No Tawamure, a novel by Yukio Mishima (1925-1970), a writer representative of Japan.

The sunset from Koganezaki can be enjoyed all year round whenever the weather is clear. The sea will start turning red as the sun goes down, and at the moment just before the sunset, the strong sparkle of sunlight will shine on the cape and the sky together, presenting a breathtaking view. You will definitely find this grand moment of the harmony of nature moving.
