Experience the beauty and power of this dramatic two-step waterfall

The Nikko area hosts numerous famous waterfalls that are easily accessible. One of the most striking is Kirifuri Falls near Kirifuri Highland . The unique bend and steepness of the waterfall and its beautiful forest location make it worth a side-trip.

Quick Facts

Kirifuri means "falling mist," describing the effect caused by the water spray (which is especially prevalent in June and July)

The area is also popular for viewing autumn colors

How to Get There

Access is by rail and bus.

From either JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station, take the bus heading for Oozasa Bokujo. Get off at Kirifuri no Taki bus stop. It's just a 10- to 15-minute walk to the falls.

An elegant display of water flow

At 75 meters high, Kirifuri Falls is one of the area's most dramatic nature spots, though the viewing platform is quite far from the action. Bouncing off rocks as it plummets, the waters form multiple flows. When the water reaches the bottom, it creates a soft mist in the air. The area is most popular during fall for its vivid colors.

Upper section of Kirifuri Falls in the autumn

The waterfall has been enjoyed for hundreds of years and has often been the subject of many artists. Now, Kirifuri Falls is easily accessible by a 15-minute hike from the parking lot/bus stop to the observatory deck.

Lower section of Kirifuri Falls in late summer. To get here you'll have to hike through the forest.
