Wakayama Kenritsu Kindai Bijutsukan (Museum of Modern Art)
Wakayama
In April 1994, Wakayama Kenritsu Kindai Bijutsukan moved from the first floor of the prefectural hall to a newly-constructed building. In the past, the collection centered on artists connected to Wakayama Prefecture, but in recent years the museum has focused its efforts on collecting modern and contemporary artworks produced in the past 100 years. Major works in the collection include Shojo to Kaigara (Little Girl and Shells) by Kigai Kawaguchi, and Kyuba-to no Hanran (Chaos in Cuba). This museum exhibits major pieces from both Japan and overseas, runs exhibitions of works by artists born in or otherwise connected to Wakayama Prefecture, and conducts group exhibitions and contests for the general public.
