This novel building, which gives the impression of being built from stacked cubes, was designed by Arata Isozaki and won the Japan Architectural Society Award. Gunma Prefecture is the birthplace of such Western-style painters as Ichiro Yuasa, Ichiro Fukuzawa, Kaoru Yamaguchi and Masao Tsuruoka. Many works by these artists are included in the collection at this art museum. The museum also offers a room dedicated to Japanese painting, where the works on display include old paintings and calligraphy.
