21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa
Experience the fusion of tradition which lives in Kanazawa and contemporary art
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa was opened as a museum that deals with the leading-edge contemporary art. The glassed-in building has a circular form with the diameter of 113 meters. It was designed aiming to make a museum like a park that is easily accessible to everyone and offers various encounters and experiences. There are 5 doors to connect inside space with outside allowing the visitors to go in and out easily. It was designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. They have designed many buildings so far in Europe and the United States including museums. They are recognized internationally. And in 2010, their architectural unit “SANAA” received the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
The region of Kanazawa flourished around the Edo period (1603 - 1868) and culture and education were greatly developed. While exhibiting many large-sized interactive contemporary art works, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa has a role to experiment to see what kind of possibility the local traditional culture which was passed down from the Edo period has in the modern age. One example is the wall painting in the lounge which is 27 meters long. While the motif of the wall painting is the pattern of the Kaga-Yuzen dyeing method which is a traditional craft of Kanazawa, the wall painting creates a modern atmosphere.
In this area, there are many tourist attractions with various tastes and art-related facilities such as Kenroku-en, one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan; Kanazawa Castle, a national important cultural property; Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art and Ishikawa-ken History Museum. It can be said that this area is the number-one cultural zone in the whole Hokuriku District.
