Tsukiji Market

Tokyo

The world's biggest marine product market.
A kitchen that supports food in the metropolitan area.

Tsukiji Market is a wholesale market in Tsukiji, Chuo-ku, in an area near Tokyo Bay. The fish market in Tokyo was originally in Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku. However, the surrounding area vanished due to the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. In response to this, the Tsukiji Market was opened in 1935. Since then, its scale and function have expanded through repeated extensions and reconstructions. At present, about 480 kinds of marine products and about 270 kinds of fruits and vegetables are gathered here from all over the country. In particular, the size of the marine product trade is the largest in the world.

In Tsukiji Market, there are sushi restaurants where people can eat fresh sea products as well as restaurants used by traders working in Tsukiji, with attractive and bountiful combination meals. In addition, the general public can also purchase products at neighboring Tsukiji Outside Market, which has a wide variety of stores, such as stores selling marine products and other food, restaurants, and stores selling cooking utensils, including pots and kitchen knives.

People are free to privately see the inside of the Tsukiji Market. However, it is necessary to apply for a tour of a tuna auction, which is the largest specialty, directly with "Osakana Fukyu Center" (Fish Information Center) beside the Kachidokimon Gate on the day of the tour. Please note that tours are on a first-come-first-served basis and reception is finished as soon as the number of applicants reaches the fixed number. In addition, please be considerate of traders when visiting the market as it is not a tourist site. In the market, trucks carrying marine products and small vehicles that skillfully go through narrow streets filled with people come and go all the time. Make sure to be careful during a market tour.
