While Japan, as a volcanic country, has many famous and secret hot springs, Tokachigawa Onsen in the town of Otofuke, Hokkaido, is a special hot spring well-informed spa enthusiasts are eager to visit. This is because Tokachigawa Onsen, unlike others which are derived from volcanos and thus are filled with the smell of sulfur, is a moor spring that comes from heat generated by ancient plants deposited deep in the ground and gushes out with lots of organic matters contained.

The moor spring is unique to the area by that has a moor where peat is deposited over a long period of time. While the amber water with low transparency is slimy, it is highly moisture-retaining due to its low level of alkaline and makes bathers recognize their skin has become much smoother once bathing in it.The Ainu people, an ethnic minority that has lived in the area from ancient times, call the spring "Kusuri no Yu" (Herbal Hot Spring). Along the Tokachigawa river, some 20 lodging facilities exist, offering various types of bath and service to let guests enjoy the moor hot spring.

The Tokachigawa river is well known as a winter home for swans. Sheer indulgence of hot springs while listing to the chirps of swans is a luxury available only in winter time.
