Sumoto Castle, which functioned as the nerve center of Awaji Island
The atmosphere of those days felt in the castle town at the foot of the mountain castle

Sumoto City is virtually in the center of Awaji Island, which is the largest island in the Seto Inland Sea. Many historic ruins dating back to the B.C. era have been discovered, suggesting that the place worked as a transportation hub connecting the Kii Peninsula and Shikoku. In 1526, which was in the middle of the Sengoku Period (1493-1590), the head of Kumano Suigun (marine troops), which was based in the southeastern part of the Kii Peninsula, constructed Sumoto Castle on Mount Mikuma in Awaji Island. While the feudal lord changed many times thereafter, Sumoto Castle was continuously given importance as the hub of military and governance functions of Awaji Island until 1642, when it was decided that the mountain castle was unnecessary. During the period, a castle town formed at the foot of Mount Mikuma and prospered.

There are still stone walls and other relics from the Sengoku Period left on Mount Mikuma. From the mock keep of the castle constructed in 1928, you can enjoy a spectacular birds-eye view. In the town at the foot of the castle are the remains of the house of the Inada Family, which once governed the area, merchants' houses of the Edo Period (1603-1868), and Sumoto Hachiman Shrine, which is said to have been founded more than 1000 years ago, preserving the atmosphere of the castle town of the Edo Period. It is not only perfect for strolling, but you can also enjoy rich seafood dishes and hot springs.
