Walking in the footsteps of Japan's greatest samurai generals

The samurai battle of Nagakute set the wheels in motion for one of the greatest changes in Japanese history. Today you can visit the field where that monumental event took place.

How to Get There

Reach Nagakute Battlefield by train.

To get to Nagakute Kosenjo Station from Nagoya Station, take the Higashiyama Subway Line to its end at Fujigaoka, and then change to the Linimo maglev linear motor car. The journey takes around 45 minutes.

Quick Facts

The Battle of Nagakute was fought between Hashiba (later Toyotomi) Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, the future shogun

The battle took place in 1584

A resting ground for samurai

The grounds that saw some of the fiercest fighting between the forces of Hashiba and Tokugawa have been well preserved, and is now maintained as a historical park.

While exploring the old battlegrounds, you will find the burial sites of fallen warlords, head mounds of defeated samurai, and many other historic sites related to the battle.

Seeing history

The battlefield is located in what is known as Kosenjo Park, and features a memorial museum that is well worth checking out, particularly if you can read some Japanese.

There is a pamphlet with English information about Kosenjo Park. Take a stroll around the area, particularly Iroganeyama Historical Park, where there is a huge stone that Ieyasu is said to have sat on when he held his war council.

While you are here

If you come to the site by car, a recommended diversion is Iwasaki Castle. The original was built at the end of the 15th century.
